ChatGPT Outage: Users Report Access Issues and Delays

On Tuesday morning, some users began experiencing problems while trying to use ChatGPT. In many cases, the chatbot failed to load and displayed the message “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong,” indicating an internal error. Similar complaints have been surfacing on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, where users are reporting widespread service disruptions.

According to Downdetector, a spike in outage reports occurred around 3:00 AM ET, suggesting a global-scale issue. OpenAI’s official status page acknowledged “elevated error rates and latency” starting at that time, affecting ChatGPT, its Sora text-to-video tool, and OpenAI’s APIs. By 5:23 AM ET, the company added a separate note on “elevated error rates on Sora” and marked the ChatGPT status as a “partial outage.”

While some users can still access ChatGPT, many report significantly slower response times and instability in the interface. Meanwhile, others appear to be using the platform without any issues, indicating the outage may not be affecting everyone equally.

Perplexity, an AI search engine that utilizes OpenAI’s models, is also reporting technical difficulties. According to its status page, the platform is experiencing “slowness and elevated error rates.” Downdetector logs show user complaints starting around 7:00 AM ET, likely linked to the broader OpenAI disruptions.

OpenAI has stated that it is actively investigating the situation. The root cause of the outages and a timeline for full service restoration have not yet been disclosed.

Update as of June 10: Information about Perplexity’s service issues has been added.
